Fowlers
Bay .... South Australia
It
was a long drive for me to Fowlers Bay, which is about 130kms West
of Ceduna, Sth Aust. Took about 9 hrs driving time, plus a short
sleep along the way as I had to wait for the servos to open to top
up on fuel.
Nothing is open between Pt Augusta and Ceduna 24hrs.
A short way past Penong is the turn-off to Fowlers Bay, dirt road,
nothing too bad, bit sandy in places. Once nearly to the bay, over
the last hill you are greeted with the most majestic sand dunes
that I have seen in many years
Fowlers Bay is a small little town, contains a couple of shacks,
holiday units, caravan park and small shop which runs all the accommodation,
diesel is the only fuel available.
A good jetty too, great for fishing off. Ask at the shop for any
information you require, they are very helpful.
Not a lot to do in the town if you do not like fishing, but if you
do, it is one great place for that. There are plenty of beaches
near by and cliffs/rocks.
Most of the spots require a small amount of sand dune driving, but
be careful of the rock outcrops on the deflated tyres.
I found in my Hilux that tyre pressures of 15psi worked fine, even
on my narrow tyres (wide tyres don't make that much of a difference),
stuck to low range 3rd, and only changed down, once I was brought
to a complete stop.
When driving in deep soft sand, any gear change while moving will
almost everytime find you getting bogged down. If this happens just
try selecting a different gearand take off very slowly, no good
if you spin the tyres, you will only get deeper. This technique
worked everytime except once, where a little push was needed. If
still no luck find another 4WD with a snatch-strap.
The GPS point for Fowlers Bay is S 31°59'25" E 132°26'10"
